Acquired Brain Injury and Pediatric CNS Tumours: Different Clinical Profiles, Yet Shared Family‑Centered, Strength‑Based Rehabilitation Needs

Prof. Jan Willem Gorter

Professor and Chair of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine

Jan Willem Gorter, MD, PhD is Professor and Chair of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine at UMC Utrecht, where he leads pediatric rehabilitation at the Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital and the Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology. He specializes in the rehabilitation of children and youth with acquired brain injury and has extensive clinical and research expertise in neurology and neuro-oncology, focusing on functional recovery, cognitive outcomes, family‑centered care, and long‑term participation after brain injury.

His program of research addresses the health, autonomy, and lifecourse development of children and youth with complex neurodevelopmental and neurological conditions, and he is internationally recognized for advancing the “F‑Words for Child Development” framework and embedding family engagement in (oncology) rehabilitation. Dr. Gorter is actively involved in national and international networks dedicated to pediatric neuro‑rehabilitation and brain injury.

Dr. Jale Özyurt is a neuroscientist and psychologist at Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg, Germany, where she works as a senior researcher in the Department of Psychology. Her current research focuses on non-invasive brain stimulation to improve cognitive control in stroke patients as well as on the neurobiological basis of cognitive and affective changes in children and adolescents with hypothalamic-pituitary tumors.
